How we calculate your retirement readiness score, what the tiers mean, and where our benchmarks come from.
RetirementReadyChecker exists because most people have no honest, unbiased way to benchmark their retirement progress. Financial calculators are either overwhelming or designed to funnel you toward a paid advisor. We built a free, no-login tool that gives you a straight answer in 3 minutes.
No email capture. No upsell. Just clarity.
Your retirement readiness score is calculated from 10 questions covering the key dimensions of retirement preparedness that financial planners use to assess long-term outcomes:
Each answer carries a weighted point value based on its relative impact on long-term retirement security. The maximum possible score is 47 points.
| Tier | Score Range | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Behind | 0 – 9 | Significant gaps in savings, habits, or planning. Immediate action needed to avoid financial hardship in retirement. |
| At Risk | 10 – 19 | Some foundations in place but meaningful shortfalls exist. Course correction now can still lead to a secure retirement. |
| On Track | 20 – 29 | Solid foundation with healthy habits. Staying consistent and optimizing taxes and investment mix will strengthen outcomes. |
| Strong | 30 – 39 | Meaningfully ahead of peers. Focus on preservation, tax efficiency, and stress-testing your plan against real retirement scenarios. |
| Excellent | 40 – 47 | Exceptional retirement readiness. You are in the top tier of preparedness. Fine-tuning and legacy planning are your primary levers. |
The peer comparison data shown in your results is derived from widely cited research and government data sources:
Benchmarks are reviewed periodically and reflect the most recently available data at time of publication.
Each tier generates a set of four personalized action items sequenced by urgency and potential impact. These recommendations are based on:
Actions are ranked by their estimated effect on long-term retirement outcomes, drawing on standard financial planning frameworks used by CFP-certified advisors.
Time-sensitive actions (e.g. capturing employer match, paying high-interest debt) are surfaced first, even when longer-term actions may have greater eventual impact.
Action plans are tailored to each scoring tier. A "Behind" user receives different guidance than a "Strong" user, because the highest-leverage actions differ significantly at each stage.
